Is a 16mm original print also known as a print down?

My understanding is that a print-down is printed directly from a 35mm negative, Dan. It would probably be the best quality original 16mm you can get.
Obviously then, not every 16mm original is a print-down.

Got it! [set5_b/set5_b/conehead.gif] Now, if a print down is taken directly from a 35mm negative, then what is an original print taken from.

A 16mm original is taken from a 16mm negative, not directly from the 35 negative.

Is it safe to say, then, that the prints that are scary sharp are likely print-downs?

I wouldn't say so - I've seen razor sharp originals.
