I just purchased a Kodak Pageant Optical/ Magnetic Sound Projector. The optical lamp does not light up. I have tried a couple of exiter lamps, but none will light. Any ideas as to why. The Magnetic sound is great!

Dan,
I've never seen a magnetic 16mm film or Pageant 16mm projector that can show them. Can you show a picture of either on here? I've been doing this as long as you have and I've never ran across even an experimental 16mm magnetic sound release. I've dealt with 8mm Super 8mm and 35mm Magnetic presentations even a Cinerama event that was extremely interesting but I've never seen a 16mm magnetic sound film or projector.

I'm no expert here, though I like Pageants. Could possibly be a shorted-out exciter lamp socket. Are there any other lamps on your machine that are connected to the exciter and go on/off with it. I learned the hard way that on Kalart Victors (my favorites) the exciter will not turn on if the threading lamp is kaput! They're wired together!

Jeff, I will have to take another look and see if there is another lamp out. Thanks. The exiter lamp wires do go to a rather large electrolitic capacitor.

Hey Dan,
the first thing I would check is if the lamp is getting voltage. It should be a DC current runnig no more than 4V at less than an amp. A simple multimeter should help you determine if power is getting to the lamp. Run it with an empty lamp socket and read what the contacts are providing. If nothing then you need to trace the wires back to the amp. Check contunuity of the wires at every solder point. I would say that optical or mag should go to the same inputs on the amp board but not sure about that model. Have you cleaned the contacts? Even the slight tarnishing of the silver contacts can render an exciter useless. Use an eraser from a num. 2 Pencil to erase any tarnishing then clean with alcohol to clean the contacts.

Next, if the problem is deeper keep in mind that some capaciters 'dry out' in the electrolite compound and need to be replaced over time. We aren't dealing with current tech here. I can point you towards dealers that sell older replacement caps. I'm currently dealing with the same problem but was able to find a company that has replacements for older parts.

Keep in mind that it can be fixed once you find the problem. These were made to be worked on.

Just had a thought Dan, is this a Solid State amp or tube amp? I had a similar problem with a 16mm projector from a Navy base where the exciter wouldn't light but the amp worked perfect. The problem was that it had a burnt out 12AX7 preamp tube that was used only to provide power to the exciter lamp. I replaced the tube and it is working perfectly ever since. If it is a tube amp then check what I mentioned before but if maybe the preamp tube is bad then give me an email. I have plenty of NOS tubes here and I can send you what you need for free to get it working again. Simple fix and cheap.
