Please can anyone help with a problem I’m having, with the xenon dc power supply on an Eiki EX2000A 16mm projector.
I had three of these projectors but recently sold the better one of the 3 to a friend. Then I had problems with the number 2 machine. The main circuit breaker kept throwing out after only a couple of minutes screening time. I could then immediately reset the breaker and the lamp would immediately strike again, but after another few minutes (2 to 10 minutes) the circuit breaker would throw out again. This is the same projector that wouldn’t run the lamp when I first owned it, and after testing the xenon lamp in number 3 projector I knew the lamp was ok, so went on to test the xenon power supply’s transformer, diodes, and capacitors. They all seemed ok but the xenon psu would still not work. I eventually realised that a previous owner had inserted a temperature activated fuse in the line from the transformer to the xenon power diodes, right against one of the big diodes with insulated tube full of heat transfer paste, and that fuse had blown. The fuse was not fitted to my other two EX2000A machines, so I could tell that heat had been a problem with this particular projector previously.
I fitted a new temp fuse to replace the blown one and the lamp worked. Great I thought, but after a few reels of film, the main circuit breaker began throwing out in the manner described earlier. If I run the projector with the rear case open and a fan blowing cool air onto the transformer, it takes about 30 seconds longer for the breaker to throw out. I removed that circuit breaker and put it into my other 2000A projector, and it worked ok, so it’s a good breaker. I then tried the breaker from the good machine in the faulty one and it did the same throwing out thing, so there must be a problem somewhere in the xenon power supply not related to the circuit breaker, the xenon lamp, the diodes, or capacitors....maybe ?
The transformer’s cooling fan that’s belt driven from the projector’s motor, has a new belt. The fan’s bearings are ok and the fan works correctly.
Help please, from someone who is familiar with this problem with Eiki EX2000A projectors.

Can you turn the power down to your lamp? My old EIKI Xenon pedestal was a power pig. I tested it when I bought it and could run with max power to the lamp. When I got it home, it couldn't...the plug was too far from the fuze panel & I had to turn the lamp power down to run the projector.

Also, if you can find one to borrow, try a contact voltage regulator to help stabilize your power to see if that helps.

In theory all projectors that are the same model should work the same, in reality, they can all be slightly different.

Hi Wayne, no the EX2000A has fixed xenon power output so it's on full all the time. That's a good point. I think there's a variable pot on what I think is a small xenon control circuit board inside the case, but it's been glued so it's held in one position, so I don't want to alter it in case I break it or stuff up the settings. I can try the control circuit board out of my other EX2000A projector and see if that helps. That's what I will do. I also suspect one or more of the power diodes or capacitors may be at fault but they seemed to test ok.

Thankyou very much. You certainly put me onto the way to fix the problem. First I removed the xenon control circuit board from the second projector and when I put it in the faulty machine, that made all the difference so I then adjusted the control pot on the faulty board and after placing it back in the original (faulty) projector the lamp wouldn't ignite, so I readjusted the pot and got it to a point where it will strike immediately and run with full brightness without throwing the circuit breaker out. There's not much adjustment between striking and running properly, and not striking, but there's enough to make all the difference.
