My latest purchase. The film was shot in Galway, Ireland , in 1968, as nowhere suitable could be found in England, to represent England of the 9th century. Although great pains were taken to ensure accuracy, weapons, war cries, etc, the scriptwriters made changes, even though they used a 1956 biography of Alfred as their source; like renaming Alfred's friend and advisor, the Welsh monk, Asser, who becomes Asher. Another change was making Alfred's wife AElswith, the daughter of King Buhred of Mercia, instead of Aelthelred Mucil, a Mercian nobleman.

The film was a financial disaster; maybe the end of the swinging 60s was the wrong time to make a film about Alfred the Great. The critics didn't like it either. Opinion about this film seems to be changing, judging by the reviews on IMDB. I didn't like it myself the first time I saw it on TV, and switched off after 30 mins. Having seen the film completely for the first time just two weeks ago, I think it's very good, and David Hemmings played the role very well. I now like this film so much I have viewed it 4 times in the last 10 days.

The screenshots are not very good. I have used filters to try and improve the colour, as it has turned red. Colour can be improved, but it's a case of experimenting to find the right combination of filters.

Just bought this book, which describes the making of the film, and examines what caused it to fail.

Okay, Robert, I'm intrigued. Your post is the first mention I ever heard of this film (hey, I was watching Bullitt in that era and I doubt 'Alfred the Great' played at a theatre near me back then.) I definitely will watch this film and am searching for a dvd on the web. Haven't of course watched Mr. Hemmings performance, but wondering if Peter O'Toole might have helped the film toward success??.

Hello Chris, the DVD has just been officially released as part of the Warner Archive series, made on demand. Copies are on Ebay; I just got mine today, so no guesses as what tonights viewing was. Peter O'Toole wasn't in this, but Michael York was the other main star. I don't actually remember seeing this advertised at the cinema myself, I'm sure if I had, the family would have wanted to see it. It's been on TV only twice in the UK to my knowledge. The soundtrack music is beautiful.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant to say, I wonder if the film might have been more successful had Peter O'Toole been cast in the lead instead of David Hemmings. Not taking anything from Mr. Hennings, as I haven't watched the film, but O'Toole seemed to have all astonishing successes throughout his career. Looking forward to watching this!
