Has anyone ever thought of an illustrated guide to the different kinds of empty reels we all encounter in this hobby? Any of "us" are used to seeing Goldbergs, Tayloreels, or Compco reels, but we've all seen some unusual specimens too. Got this idea from seeing ebay listings describing "heart" reels, "bell and circle" reels (not Bell and Howell!), "Eames design," "art deco," etc. Maybe we could use this to identify who made them in the first place.

I have some plastic reels from Europe. I'll check and see who made them.

Bonum Reels
Taylor Reels
Goldberg Brothers Reels
Bell and Howell Reels
Elmo Reels
Kodak Soundie Reels

Good question but in my opinion, it would be hard to name every type of reel out there. I have all the standards, Goldberg, Taylor, Plio but I have also seen a lot in my days. I have reels with nothing but Japanese on them, several episodes of MASH with raised gold lettering and no manufacturer except for Warner Bros., plus the odd auto load reels (I suspect B&H since they were the only autoload projector for 16mm I've encountered.) Also with newer films I have several reels labled Technicolor Distributing but most of those were Plio reels.

True enough; it's probably not necessary to get into customized colors and labels made for distributors, but it might still be fun to see some of the older and odder reels out there, especially from the early days of home movies and toy projectors. You still run into them when buying older Castle films and similar, and some of them are really (or reel-ly?) unusual.
