What is your understanding as to how it works?

My understanding is that it gives the seller a score. If he or she doesn't match up to a certain level he or she is penalised. Not sure how.

Right you are, Mick! The penalization is in the form of the seller having higher Ebay selling fees. The buyer has no idea this can occur when leaving low star rating. Not good! Rather than using this low rating option the buyer should consider contacting the seller for a refund or partial refund. Also if a seller keeps a daily watch over his star ratings, he will be able to figure out who left the low rating which will probably result in that buyer being blocked from bidding on that seller's auctions. This secret rating system is counter productive for the buyer and seller. I believe if a buyer is dissatisfied, the seller should know why and who the buyer is. [set5_b/set5_b/toetap05.gif]

I think it's stupid. My understanding is if your stars are a hair off perfect you get the penalty. Ebay is for buyers, not sellers.

I do more buying than selling.

Thanks, Bill. It is deceiving on Ebay's part. I can understand leaving bad dsr and feedback for a seller who ignores you or refuses to correct a bad transaction, but if a seller bends over backwards(me) to give great customer service, then that should reflect in the feedback. I have to agree with Dan partially. If a seller does his best to correct a situation it should be refleced on. I recently had a bad experience on here and the seller did nothing to help correct the situation so I bad mouthed him. Not a star rating but he would't get any. Otherwise I'm usually a buyer on here and I always try to satisfy the seller. As far as selling or trading, I am usually the one getting prints or products before the buyer or trader is able to send anything to keep them happy.

IMHO it is one sided so it doesn't work. [set5_b/set5_b/beatdeadhorse5.gif]

Personally, if I am completely happy with the transaction at the outset, I leave 5 star on all available. If not, I raise any problem with the supplier BEFORE leaving Feedback. If it's satisfactorily resolved, then I leave 5 star feedback.
If I have any reason to consider than the supplier is trying it on or is an outright con artist, then I leave negative WITH A CLEAR REASON.

That way, the honest (and those trying to be) are not unjustly penalised.

Martin, if all buyers had common sense like you, it would be a better system. Our fees are are based partially on the star ratings that sellers didn't ask for, leaving our wallets open for morons who can't read or understand descriptions, think if the postage is even $.50 lower than what they paid you are ripping them off, if they don't have a tracking number the same afternoon they pay you are SLOW in shipping, and so on and on and on...YES those things really do happen.

Then you have the way ebay words the stars in the rating process. The way they word it, 4 stars if fine...5 stars is extra special...right there makes the system broken. The average person who does not realize (or maybe they do) that 4 stars for a GOOD transaction actually hurts us in the wallet when they may think they are doing us a favor.

Great comic strip. I'm not truly crazy about the star system although I have a five star rating as a seller. In a perfect world it would be great but it's not and it only takes one person to throw things off. I had a buyer just recently to file a NOT AS DESCRIBED complaint without ever contacting me. It was a mistake on my part but I was more that willing to correct the problem. I did issue a full refund and let the buyer keep the item. Luckily he left positive feedback.
