You would think that with all the film buyers that showed up at the Derannn closing, some entrepenuer would see an opportunity to open an online business of providing new releases and used too. They could approch Derann about purchasing their lab equipment and unsold stock. Wayne will probably be able to answer this one: I could never understand about the limited printing of new films. It seems that if you printed more than a few copies of a title, you could sell them for less and make more money because you sold more of that title. Lower price means more sells. If you print less copies and sell for a higher price to recoup your intinial investment, you would sell less. Also, these film companies like Derann never do marketing research to get an idea as to what collectors want in new releases. You'd think they would reasearch though these film collector forums, right?

Opnions please.

Dan, short story long: There is a not so fine line when it comes to pricing. Some people think price high to cover costs in a short production run with any subsequent prints being a bonus, some price lower and hope to sell enough to cover costs. I argue about this subject often.

Depends who you talk to, I have been told my prices are high, and I have been told my prices are low. One thing I know as fact, after I purchased the negs and started having some of my own made, I lowered the prices for most things Derek used to sell and the sales took off. My printing costs are a bit higher than they were 10 years ago too...Don't forget, Derek sold the negs due to lack of sales so it is not hard to put your theory to test.

For myself personally, I will not be doing much more conventional reduction work. It is SUPER expensive. To put it bluntly, what it cost me say 4-5 years ago for 10-12 minutes of negs & track work, now days I can get 3-4 minutes for the same price. With the film collector's base as small as it is, the percentage who use what I have is a micron so conventional work is a HUGE gamble. I do have a few good rolls of the dice left though. 8-)

I'm also going to do a few tests having Marco make a few things for me personally, and a few extra copies. Creating digital artwork and or scanning 35mm to digital and sourcing to print 16mm seems the way to go to keep new things coming. In a sense, that is what Jack Rizzo does, except he is a bit more sophisticated and shoots a regular sound track vs. Marco's red sound track.

So, more prints does not necessarily lower overhead. Is the price of raw film and chemicals(and time) the reason for high overhead no matter how many you turn out? Could the gamble factor be lowered by doing some market research through the online forums. I do understand some collectors will say "yes, if released, I'll buy one" doesn't always compute to stepping up to the plate when time to buy.

Does Jack Rizzo make new prints?

pretty much, that is it. Raw stock, time & chemicals have gone up. The audio end is the real killer though. Here are the rates I have to pay for the current apx. 4 minutes of work being done. Keep in mind these are pretty good rates...

AUDIO TRANSFER FROM 35MM PRINTS INTO PROTOOLS W/ SET UP
1hr. x 195.00=$195.00

DAT/DA88 SOUND MASTER (ALL 3 ON 1 PIECE OF STOCK) 1 x 25.00= $25.00

35/32 OPTICAL TRACK CREATION INCLUDING OPT TRK DEVELOPING 3 x 55.00= $165.00

SYNCH 1 x 38.00= $38.00

NEGATIVE EDITORIAL TO BUILD NEGATIVE TO ABOVE SPECIFICATIONS 2hr x 105.00= $210.00

Right now the new stuff I have going on has been heavily asked for so I'm pretty confident the sales will be there. And YES, you are correct. I have found that only about 30% - 40% of people who say they want something if printed actually step up to the plate and make the purchase. But I'm used to it being I sold tobacco for years, and same is true when recruiting help for my fireworks shows, a LOT of people are always gung-ho YES YES YES people but when the time comes....heavy retraction rates are the norm.

Having Marco make prints will cut out the above audio work. However he is a bit more per foot/minute for printing. Also I will have to pay the graphic artist for work provided, and or with other snipes, there will be the upfront cost of digital scanning. Being more of the costs will be shifted to printing vs. set-up, it makes it easier since those costs are as needed vs. must do no matter what.

This will be done by Marco. The quality of the source files are FAR superior than this low res sample.

Jack makes new prints, we have discussed it on the phone a few times. BUT I have tried for months to get set prices and he seems to have forgotten me so I stayed with FotoKem.

Those are very hefty costs. I didn't realize the expense involved. Do you do super 8 too?

I just looked over your list and would like to purchase Space Visitor #162. I send you an email. I'm challenging other members to purchase and support Waynes efforts to provide new prints. [set5_b/set5_b/sifone.gif]

I had listed it on flebay yesterday but closed the auction for you Dan. [set5_b/set5_b/cheers2.gif]

I don't do S8mm right now, but I am in contact with Andec about pricing. It looks like S8mm is just as much or maybe a bit more than 16mm due to the striping costs.

I sure hread alot on the forums from super 8 collectors about wanting new releases, but not much about 16mm releases. Maybe super 8 would be more profitable.

I just sent a Paypal for Space Visitor. I have the Onga Bonga snack bar. That one is scream.

Wayne, I received Space Visitor today. Wow! Wow! Wow! That was fast. [set5_b/set5_b/hurray.gif] I'll include it in one of the halloween shows.

Looks like the USPS is trying to earn their keep for a change. [set5_b/set5_b/smilielol5.gif] Two days is not bad at all to get across the country and in your mail box.
