I have heard of removing the heat proof glass between the lamp and the film of the ELMO ST1200 to produce more light, if you are not going to be still framing. How many of you would recommend this?

I had the glass removed from mine a few years back, by a guy who knows the Elmo machines inside out. He recommended it. It hasn't caused any problems, though the light increase wasn't dramatic.

I have three operating ST-1200s and removed it from each one. Zero problems. I removed it not to access more light, but because the disc lever assembly bent easily and sometimes jammed in half open position.

Wouldn't removing the glass cause more heat to reach the film?

It just dawned on me we're talking about two different things, Roger. I was referring to the disc that's attached to a lever and drops when the projector is in still mode. It was designed to protect the still film from the lamp heat. That's the device I would find would sometimes not close completely and properly. I took them off all my projectors. I also do not use still mode (if I did, I would have a problem--frame burns from the intense lamp heat.) Now...in rereading your inquiry and Mick's reply, I realize you guys are referring to the glass shield that has a separation line down the middle. It never occurred to me to remove that glass. I am almost always satisfied with the screen brightness from my projectors as they stand. As for your last post, Roger, I read somewhere that the split heat glass also helps protect the film, deflecting lamp heat toward the top vent. Makes engineering sense to me, but I wonder if film moving along at 24 fps would be affected by the additional heat.

As I said, I've had no problems with heat.

So, Roger, as you asked, what did you decide?

If there is only a slight difference in brightness I believe I will leave well enough alone. Thanks for your help

To be honest, on reflection, I hadn't used the projector prior to the glass being removed so I can't verify how much gain in brightness can be achieved.

However, it can't be much I would think, so if you're unsure, better to leave it alone as you say.
