I had one for about 5 years with both optical and mag soundtracks. The lens was amazing and the sound options were great and both clear as 16mm. Still, the image floated a bit. That is the only complaint I have on the Chinon's.The one I had I think was an early '80's machine but had absolutly no problems with it. All I ever replaced on it was the lamp.

I think Chinon did a 1200ft machine. Is that correct?

When I say 'floating' I a mean that projecting optical sound prints the image went up and down on the screen a bit. Not severely just put off a bit by it. You have to take into account that most optical films were on single 8 film so was thnner than magnetic prints. With magnetic prints the projector performed beautifully. Threaded without problems and played perfectly. With optical sound films, the image tended to bounce a bit but never damaged the films.I guess in a way it's what is in your collection and how you want to treat it. I can fully reccomend the Chinon super 8 It's a very good macine and worth the price you pay for magnetic prints. As far as optical, You'd probably be better off with an Elmo if you can afford it.
The Chinon is still not a bad choice though since single 8 is smaller than Super 8.
The Chinon I had is a good projector and I do reccomend it. Any other questions feel free to ask.

By the way,
Chonin machines never used a '1200 reel. They were dedicated to a user marked and were 400' reel max.

The SS1200 stereo was the 'top of the range' model from Chinon

Hi Mal,

How did it compare with the Elmos?

Was it cheaper? As reliable as the ST range?
