I have Chinon 20 XL camera and am thinking about doing some filming. I know It can be striped after developing. If I do location sound recording is there away to synchronize the sound to the film. How about if I transfer the the by way of a camcorder to a digital format, then add the recorded sound track to a digital format. Place both in an editing software on my computer and sync them together. After they are synced I can add the sycned sound to the striped film to my GS-1200. I have read that you can generate a 25hz square signal on your computer that will sync with the GS-1200.

Sound doable?

Just ordered my first roll of raw super 8 film stock in decades. It is the new KODAK EKTACHROME 100D. This is very exciting! I used to love to shoot film. Video is okay, but film, well that is the cats pajamas.

Check out this footage someone has put on Youtube. The color saturation is excellent as is the sharp fine grain:

Here's good luck to you Dan, I haven't done any Super 8 filming since Kodak discontinued their sound cartridges.

Hope it goes well. I've shot a few rolls of super 8 on an Elmo 1000S to start and then switched over to a Zenit Quarz 1 x 8S-2(Russian wind-up camera). Though you might want to see if your camera can meter 100D correctly, some can only read either 40 or 160 films. Also make sure that switch on your camera with the lightbulb and sun is always set to the lightbulb as that gets the internal filter out of the film path.

I think this camera will meter the Etkachrome 100D as 160 ASA instead of 100.

There is a workaround however. Either the camera has a backlight function, that opens the aperture by one stop, or there is a little +1 / -1 setting to permanently off set the light meter.

Frankly speaking: there are better cameras around than the Chinon... For example any Canon camera will outperform the Chinon in the optics department and the majority of them will read 100D correctly.

Bottom line: enjoy shooting super 8! It's great fun. I still shoot about 20 to 30 cartridges a year. Who said super 8 is dead :D

With one pin, it will only detect either 40 or 160 ASA, so it'll overexpose 100D a little bit. This should matter too much, but if you don't have an offset switch then you can use an external lightmeter. Good luck shooting! I personally use a Quarz 1 x 8S-2 which is a Russian clockwork camera, so no batteries except for the lightmeter(Which can expose up to 200ASA properly). Also if you need a lightmeter with frame rates, I suggest the Sverdlovsk-4, again a Soviet product, but really accurate and cheap. Though you do have to use a motherboard battery in place of the original(which are out of production).
