I was reading an old issue of The Reel Image tonight about glass beaded screens and how much better the image was when projected on them. Anyone use one of these screens and can testify to it's merits. I have a 12 foot DaLite Matte white screen screen and a 19 foot throw. Does a beaded screen require a greater distance for the viewer to get the optimum effect?

BTW, the article was by Lance Alspaugh back in 2002.

Glass bead screens are a P.I.A. when they get dirty...I was not so sad when ours ripped in half. It had a nice image, but I never did a comparison with other screens.

Now I just use a screen Michael Coffin had made for me from blackout material. 8.5' W X 6.5' H

I use a pull down matte white screen. I have not done a comparison either but I do have a tri-pod glass beaded screen. I will pull it out and give it a try. It is smaller than the screen in my set up so that is why I don't really use it. I do believe with the glass beaded screen it has a narrow viewing angle to get best results....you can't sit to far on either side and you start to lose the viewing experience.

Bill, a comparison would be interesting. How about some screen shots from each screen. i would think distance would be important when using a glass beaded screen, but in Lance's article, he says his throw was only 19 feet.

I know this sounds like a cheap-man's fix but I use a six foot wide peice of wrapping paper taped up sideways against the living room wall. The backing is white waxed paper but is disposable and really reflects the light properly. The setup is so easy because I just tape it to my living room wall but the results are wonderful, and cheap around the holidays. (Buy the big roll). Used to have a glass bead Daylight screen but it was so hard to set up the tripod plus you were limited on a round edged screen that I threw it out. Couldn't deal with a schoolhouse screen so now I use wide, backside of wrapping paper.

Bill, when taking screen shots don't use the flash.

I had a glass beaded screen years ago. It was nice and bright but the viewing angle was narrow. And it was not very large. I now use matte white or just project on a white wall.

Well I discovered after looking that I have a one glass beaded screen and a couple silver screens. My main screen in my cinema is matte white but due to the position of it in the corner I was unable to set up the beaded screen next to it for a proper comparison. So, I set up a silver screen and a beaded screen and projected the short PLAYING TRAINS on both screens at the same time.

I should have selected a different film as things were fast moving and it was hard to get clear screen shots. My observations were the silver screen was brighter but the images seemed softer. Also, both images seemed to be dimmer if I was not directly in front of them.

The throw was about 10' and the silver screen is on the left, the beaded on the right.

Here are a couple screen shots that came out. Hopefully you can make some observations from them.

Bill
