I have a Kodak Sound 8 that requires a DHJ Lamp. These lamps sell for around $50 and have 10 hour life. This is not cost effective. [set5_b/set5_b/conehead.gif] Does anyone know haw to adapt a halogen lamp to this projector? It's easy to take the existing lamp socket out and there is plenty of room to add something else, But will the cooling fan have enough effect to handle say a 250 watt lamp.

DHJ 500watt 120volt

If you are using a lower wattage halogen then I would imagine that the cooling fan would be able to keep it cool enough. I have an old Brightbeam that uses a 500 watt lamp and it sounds like a jet engine when running. The main thing to consider is that you have the lamp at the right voltage and it is able to be aimed directly at the picture source. Most Halogen bulbs as you know have a diametric reflector and you need to know the distance between the film and the focus point of the lamp. That really should be the main point of concern. Converting the voltage is easy if you know just a bit of electronics.

$50 is good...DonsBulbs wants $155 for the 250 watt and $70 for the 500 watt.

Is it really a projector that you want to use a lot to be worth the trouble of changing out the lamp socket? IF it is, try contacting Ken Layton for ideas. The fan should be enough for cooling 250 watts. All the info I find on that projector & bulb shows 250 watt as the smallest size.

Well, I just got the scoop form Dino Everette. He said he used a QLV-1 socket and an ELH bulb. The ELH is 300w 120v. That should be bright enough. I found the socket online at eLightbulbs for $8.69 and I have a bunch of ELH bulbs. ELHs run about $8.00 with a 35 hour life span.

Wayne, I am an 8mm sound nut. The chase is on and the game is afoot!

Dan, when you start to run low on the ELH bulbs, drop me a line. I have a few you can have [set5_b/set5_b/sifone.gif]

Hey Dan,
Can you post a pic of the refit you did to that projector. Would like to see how the replacement went.

Erik,

When the parts arrive, I'll post pics as I perform the mod.

Chris, That website should be called "AnthroApology". [set5_b/set5_b/smilielol5.gif]

Dan, so sorry as I have been so busy lately (Did I tell you I went to Maine to run some 28mm films...then stopped by Tom Stathes house and projected 21 reels of 28mm Bray cartoons) but now I am back.....OK so here is the mod I did on my Kodak sound 8...I admit there is a bit of bodgery that I did taking out the original lamp, but I knew this was going to be a machine I used rather than a show piece, so I took it out...I then just built up a flat base to put the QLV-1...I used some sort of plastic type for the bottom part and then some aluminum on top of that...I screwed the lamp socket into the top of the base, and then from underneath screwed the base into the existing metal base on the projector...The wiring is not an issue because the existing bulb was 120v....BUT since I hadn't used it in awhile I pulled it out and decided I wanted it to get even brighter so I added a 24V transformer to mine and changed the bulb to the 24v 250w and it is now crazy bright for Standard 8mm, but tonight I was not getting any sound out of it...I seem to remember the tiny amp being what caused me to shelve this before, but now that I made it even brighter, I need to solve whatever is causing the sound to not come out, plus I need to fix a sleeve onto the B&H f 1.2 zoom lens so I can have an even brighter pic and an adjustable lens..OH and I should confess that I used a small shiv at the rear of my socket base to place the lamp perfectly perpendicular with the lens.
