My latest purchase. The film was shot in Galway, Ireland , in 1968, as nowhere suitable could be found in England, to represent England of the 9th century. Although great pains were taken to ensure accuracy, weapons, war cries, etc, the scriptwriters made changes, even though they used a 1956 biography of Alfred as their source; like renaming Alfred's friend and advisor, the Welsh monk, Asser, who becomes Asher. Another change was making Alfred's wife AElswith, the daughter of King Buhred of Mercia, instead of Aelthelred Mucil, a Mercian nobleman.
The film was a financial disaster; maybe the end of the swinging 60s was the wrong time to make a film about Alfred the Great. The critics didn't like it either. Opinion about this film seems to be changing, judging by the reviews on IMDB. I didn't like it myself the first time I saw it on TV, and switched off after 30 mins. Having seen the film completely for the first time just two weeks ago, I think it's very good, and David Hemmings played the role very well. I now like this film so much I have viewed it 4 times in the last 10 days.
The screenshots are not very good. I have used filters to try and improve the colour, as it has turned red. Colour can be improved, but it's a case of experimenting to find the right combination of filters.
