My other hobby, besides phonograph records is collecting vintage radio and phonographs. After enjoying a tube type Zenith Trans-Oceanic for several years, I found the transistorized later version. It is the Trans-Oceanic 7000Y. It is probably one of the all time top of the line multiband portable listening radios. These are real beauties. The first one is B600 from 1959. The second is a 7000Y from 1972:

What memories. I dug one of these out of my grandfather's closet when I was about 12. It was a bit newer but all black and silver and took about 8 D cell batteries. Picked up broadcasts from all around the world. I spent hours listening to it. The one I played with as a kid disappeared after he passed away but been looking for one ever since. If I remember right, it boasted 19 transisters. Not sure what that had to do with picking up broadcasts but what an awsome radio.

Trans-Oceanics are certainly awesome. I was listening to the tube one just last night. I picked up China during their English broadcast and some conspiracy radio here in the US. Cuba always comes in clear. I remember listening to Cuba when I was a kid before Castro. Wow! the central American music was really great! In the mornings I can get Europe in general. I even have a 75 foot copper wire antenna in my backyard connected to two trees. This makes a huge reception upgrade.

This is my Grundig Model 2035W/3D/GB from 1955, it has four speakers and sounds great also has a magic eye that looks great at night
I too like the old time broadcasts, but jazz or classical sounds good on it, so different to modern DAB radio. [set5_b/set5_b/sifone.gif]

Colin, that's a real beauty! How is the sw reception? The fidelity is exceptional on these high end radios for sure. I have plugged turntables into some of my tubes radios and the reproduction of the 78rpms is remarkable. Of course these designed with that option in mind.
