I am borrowing a 16mm print of THE OMEN off of a friend. Looking at the side I could see what appeared to be some sprocket damage repair. I didn't check the film on my rewinds before viewing.....mistake. I was watching the first reel and about 3/4 of the way into it the projector started making funky sounds and the picture was chattering around and I stopped it but not before white mucky goo was all in the first sprocket and gate.....ahhhhhh!
I got the film removed and removed the 25' section so I could clean it up. It was already book-ended with splices so no harm done. The "repair" was like sticky glue (first picture). I used Filmguard to remove the sticky residue off (second picture) and it seemed to be smooth but it appears to be getting sticky again on the top side (third picture).
What kind of repair is this and why is it sticky.......and can something be done to remedy this? Any advise would be appreciated.
The good news is I gave the projector the once over so it's much cleaner than it was last night before I started!
